Abstract

Extensive reading enhances students' reading comprehension by engaging them in the process of reading, drawing upon data obtained through searches conducted on PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. The aim of this article is to describe how extensive reading contributes to English language students, particularly in reading instruction. The review findings demonstrate that the contributions of extensive reading in second language learning contexts, language learning for students, as well as the characteristics and benefits of extensive reading, align with students' reading comprehension. As students engage in more reading, they acquire proficiency in multiple languages, leading to the development of their language competencies. This process highlights the contribution of extensive reading to students' reading comprehension. This review is expected to provide meaningful insights for instructional design.

INTRODUCTION

Reading English texts entails significant rules for second language learners like us. Reading is not only a course subject but also a regular activity conducted at all times. Students typically read texts that they find interesting, including works of fiction. In today's era, accessing fiction and academic texts has become considerably easier due to the rapid development of technology. Students can easily search for and access texts online, and they often engage in reading activities in various locations.

Reading comprehension is crucial for success in academic learning. Without a solid understanding of reading texts, students may struggle in various courses. Understanding course material is paramount, be it in scientific disciplines, social sciences, technology, or other fields. In the domains of social sciences, knowledge, and culture, research indicates that many students lack comprehension strategies necessary to derive meaning from texts. The comprehension abilities of students are often insufficient.

Insufficient comprehension skills are also evident in the lack of understanding among students regarding reading strategies to derive meaning from texts (McNamara, 2004). Given students' proficiency in comprehending the context of a book, educators should follow guidelines to enhance students' understanding. When discussing reading strategies, there are several strategies that can be utilized to enhance students' abilities.

Many researchers have proven that extensive reading has numerous benefits for students. Bamford (1998) states that extensive reading not only enhances the knowledge and self-confidence of readers but also improves speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, including vocabulary. Bamford (2004) highlights the positive characteristics of extensive reading and emphasizes the advantages it offers in fostering a positive attitude towards achieving the target language, thereby motivating students to engage in academic reading.

1. Extensive reading addresses various issues, such as distinguishing between what is being learned and what has already been mastered, enhancing students' reading fluency, and naturally reinforcing vocabulary acquisition.

2. The second advantage is that students are able to learn independently and feel a sense of personal growth through reading English texts.

3. Every student possesses different abilities, and extensive reading provides a range of texts that are suitable for individual students' capabilities. Students are encouraged not only to select books based on their interests but also to read the entire chosen book.

METODOLOGY

The methodology employed in this paper is a literature review. Several articles were sourced from databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, and Google Scholar. The search keywords used were "reading," "reading strategy," and "extensive reading." A total of 6 articles that met the criteria for extensive reading were selected for this literature review. The selection of literature was based on the following criteria: 1) articles focusing on the concept of using reading strategies, 2) articles that encompassed the topic of reading, 3) articles published in the English language, 4) articles published between 2008 and 2018, and 5) articles that utilized samples of students who were learning reading through the extensive reading strategy.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The benefits of extensive reading have been extensively documented by researchers. It not only enhances students' reading abilities but also contributes to vocabulary knowledge, improves language testing proficiency, and enhances students' writing skills. Brown (2001) suggests that the components of extensive reading, in conjunction with existing reading instructions, are highly relevant. Yamashita (2008) found in their study that extensive reading improves students' ability to comprehend reading strategies. Junko (2008) discovered that reading strategies enable students to learn and analyze texts more quickly. Mermelstein (2014) conducted research on the use of extensive reading to enhance EFL learners' reading skills among English language students in Taiwan. The findings showed a significant improvement in students' reading abilities after implementing extensive reading strategies. Jang (2015) investigated the effectiveness of extensive reading in improving reading proficiency and motivation. The results indicated that the extensive reading strategy was highly effective in reading instruction. Chen et al. (2013) conducted research on the effectiveness of extensive reading using e-books and found that extensive reading was highly effective as a reading instructional medium.

CONCLUSION

Based on the review, it can be concluded that extensive reading plays a significant role in improving students' reading abilities within the context of language learning. The findings indicate that extensive reading has a positive impact on enhancing students' reading skills. This review is expected to be beneficial in informing instructional design and curriculum development.
